The aerodynamic formation flight, which is also known as aircraft wake-surfing for efficiency (AWSE), enables to harvest the energy inherent in another aircraft’s wake vortex. As thrust of trailing can be reduced during cruise resulting benefit traded longer flight time, larger range, less fuel consumption, or cost savings accordingly. Furthermore, amount and location emissions caused by are subject change saturation effects cumulated occur, AWSE favorably affect climate impact corresponding flights. In order quantify these effects, we present an interdisciplinary approach combining fields aerodynamics, operations atmospheric physics. comprises integrated model chain assess a given air traffic scenario based on plan data, interactions between members, detailed trajectory calculations well adapted accounting from proximity members. Based this approach, derived representative scenarios world’s major airports analyzing assessing plans. formations were recalculated calculation tool emission inventories created. inventories, quantitatively estimated using average temperature response (ATR) metric, calculated global near surface over time horizon 50 years. It shown, that new operational procedure has significant mitigation potential impact. For scenario, relative range 22% 24% while saving sum up 5–6%.
